About me

More about me can be found at my profile on OkCupid.com. I am IvanKaramazov there.

Listal is for lists, so here's some more:

radio: The Don and Mike Show, The Dr. Dean Edell Show, Car Talk, All Things Considered, Ring of Fire, Fresh Air, The Kevin Wheeler Show. I *heart* NPR.

philosophical positions: (semantic) anti-realism, atheism, conceptualism, mathematical conventionalism, determinism, humanism, mathematical intuitionism, (esp. metaethical) minimalism, naturalism, panpsychism, quietism, Socratic intellectualism.

foods: Burgers, Pizza, Lasagna, Enchiladas, Murgh Makhani, Pierogi, Sam Gyup Sal, Baklava, Fettuccine al Burro e Panna, Frito Pie, Sopaipilla, Chimichangas. I haven't tried but would probably like: Goulash, Indio Viejo, Khoresh Gheimeh, Chicken Kiev. Make a recommendation to me.

board games: Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, Diplomacy, Backgammon, Scattergories.

comic strips/webcomics: Calvin and Hobbes, Non Sequitur, For Better or For Worse, Foxtrot, Dinosaur Comics, White Ninja Comics, a softer world, xkcd.

physical activities: The only one I do at all often is walking while reading. I would love to find somebody who could get me to join them in a regular dose of any of these others that I enjoy, but rarely make time for: kayaking or anything involving paddles or the water, swimming, basketball, weight lifting, calvinball, charity walks, sex. I would probably also like yoga-type things, but I'm probably not physically fit enough for it.

religious belief systems (because they're no more important than the rest of this crap...keep in mind that belief systems are different from traditions and practices): agnosticism, atheism, Buddhism, deism, humanism, Jainism, Sikhism, taoism, Unitarian Universalism...I tend to love the Jews, not because of their beliefs, but because of their disbeliefs.

art: I haven't really developed any attitudes (positive or negative) about art in general, but I like Dali, Seurat, Van Gogh, and most impressionists.

Here is a list of people with whom I've lost contact and of whom I wonder where they are and how they are doing: Leta Bryant, Anita Carrasco, Lana Casper, Darinee Chen, Jasmine Diola, Marie Dorrell, Kara Franco, Jennifer Hofstra, Omar Holguin, Brian Jones, Janet Kozak, Renee Starks, Jeannette Vallegos, and some others whose names I can't remember...

A nice little book

Posted : 13 years, 3 months ago on 9 October 2007 01:09 (A review of Searching for Meaning)

Margaret Isherwood earned a degree in philosophy and it shows in her honest and open examination of life's meaning. Unlike most books with similar titles, this book isn't religious dogma or pandering self-help.

If you are looking for meaning, read this book. If you think you already have all the answers, you should still read this book.

The book has one flaw, and that is the author's occasional overzealous endorsement of parapsychology. I think this can be easily ignored or overlooked.
